The first venture by Elon Musk into the liquor business, Tesla Tequila, is now out of stock. The Tesla Tequila was selling out very fast, similar to his previous eccentric products such as The Boring Company Not-a-Flamethrower and the Tesla Short Shorts.
Elon Musk has not announced the amount of available bottles of Tesla Tequila available for purchase. However, it is unsurprising that the alcoholic beverage sold out so fast, given that the tequila is priced at $250 and is arguably an instant collector’s item due to its unique design and beautiful lightning-shaped bottle.
It took about two and a half years for Elon Musk to bring the Tesla Tequila to market. In the CEO’s 2018 April Fool’s joke, the product was initially listed. The joke featured a picture depicting a passed-out Elon Musk who was allegedly discovered by Tesla employees surrounded by “Teslaquila” bottles. Requests for a real-life version of the alcoholic beverage were promptly requested by social media followers of the CEO, particularly after Musk in his now-deactivated Instagram account suggested a mockup of the product.
Tesla Tequila would possibly have gone to market earlier if a patent examiner had not dismissed its trademark application. The EV maker filed a USPTO trademark application for a beverage called “Teslaquila” in October 2018, but a patent examiner argued that a beverage named “Spirit Tesla” from the Serbian brewing company Valjevsko was too close in name, even though the two beverages did not contain the same content. A distilled agave liquor / distilled blue agave liquor was mentioned as Tesla’s drink, and Spirit Tesla was related to plum brandy, also known as Slivovitz.
Taking into account that Tesla launched its alcoholic beverage under the name “Tesla Tequila,” the original “Teslaquila” trademark seems to have simply been abandoned. However, the change in naming seems to be a non-issue, seeing as the alcoholic beverage was sold out only hours after it went live at the official Tesla shop.
For now, those who have managed to order a Tesla Tequila bottle successfully should count themselves very fortunate. After all, Tesla products seem to be uncommon, especially if they come in exquisitely crafted bottles that look perfect as a holiday present. With 2020 being the way it is, everyone deserves a Tesla Tequila bottle, after all.
