Tesla Model Y Refreshed interior hits U.S. showrooms

Tesla’s “Refreshed” version of the Model Y crossover is hitting U.S. showrooms. The all-electric crossover 2021 edition is fitted with many of the same features as the “Refresh” Model 3 that was rolled out last year. The new-and-improved interior arrived at U.S. showrooms after original updates were spotted in China.

Tesla’s Giga Shanghai facility in China started production of the all-electric crossover just nine months after the first deliveries of the Model Y in the U.S. Tesla Design Studio for the Chinese market launched the Model Y on New Year’s Day 2021, making it possible for people to order the new Tesla vehicle. In conjunction with a newly revised center console, new door panel designs, a heated steering wheel, the revised design of the Model Y was first seen in the 2021 Model 3 Refresh.

The Model Y’s “Refreshed” interior is now appearing in the U.S. market after being available in China for a month and a half, as a member of the Tesla Motors Club forum spotted the latest interior design in a building earlier this week at the Rocklin, California, showroom.

TMC member ‘joeinsac‘ shared some photos of the new Model Y interior, clearly shown by the storage arrangement of the retractable center console and the improved door panels.

“Joeinsac” said:

“I was at the Rocklin showroom today and noticed several Y’s with the new style console. All of them still had the old style headlights.”

Tesla removed the previous piano-black color for the center console wrap. It was prone to fingerprints and dust and required constant cleaning to maintain its shiny finish. The new design is a matte finish and uses a retractable door. The previous design folded in and eliminated some storage space. Additionally, wireless charging is also available under the center dash screen.

Several other characteristics that are not noticeable in these images were included in the Model Y version released in China earlier this year. These included a heated steering wheel, which is likely to be included in 2021 Model Y builds as it is already included in the new Model 3s, a highly efficient HEPA air filtration device to prevent the entry into the cabin of viruses, bacteria, and odors. This is referred to in the Model S and Model X as Tesla’s Bioweapon Protection Mode.

In recent memory, Tesla has made numerous updates to all four of its currently offered vehicles. The Model Y was next, after refreshing the Model 3, as the two vehicles share interior designs that are almost identical. During the company’s Q4 2020 Earnings Call, the Model S and Model X, Tesla’s long-standing flagship cars, both also experienced major improvements to their interior design announced by Tesla.
