The Tesla Model Y, one of China’s best-selling SUVs, appears to be seeing longer wait times. As per information from Tesla’s website in China, the latest expected delivery dates for the Model Y’s available variants are currently listed at 2-6 weeks.
Tesla is delivering as many vehicles as it can before the end of the quarter. This is especially true in China, as the country is the largest and most competitive electric vehicle market in the world. With this in mind, extended wait times for new vehicle orders can be seen as a potential sign of healthy demand from consumers.
As noted in a CNEV Post report, the last change in estimated wait times for the Model Y in China was way back in January, when the entry-level RWD variant and the Model Y Long Range’s wait times were updated from 1-4 weeks to 2-5 weeks. The update was implemented following Tesla’s aggressive price cuts for the Model 3 and Model Y, which triggered a wave of demand for the vehicles.
The Tesla Model Y has seen some momentum in China, with 42,508 Model 3 and Model Y being sold in May. In the same month, Tesla China also exported 35,187 vehicles, as per data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). The Model Y, for its part, saw its retail sales in China rise to 31,054 units, up 428.58% year-over-year.
Overall, Tesla China also sold an impressive 152,461 units of the Model Y domestically from January to May. That’s up 87.03% year-over-year, and it was also enough to make the Model Y China’s best-selling SUV during the period.
Expectations are high that Tesla China’s operations will see some notable updates in the coming months, especially with the highly-anticipated rollout of the Model 3’s “Project Highland” update. There’s a lot of excitement surrounding Project Highland, as it is expected to pave the way for the Model 3 to receive updates to its exterior, interior, and technology. Project Highland is also expected to feature a new design that would make it more cost-efficient to produce.
