Tesla Model Y sextuples closest EV competitor in sales in Denmark

The Tesla Model Y sextupled the closest EV competitor in sales in Denmark, dominating the country’s electric vehicle sector in March.

Tesla’s all-electric crossover sold 3,203 units in March, industry data showed, while the closest competitor, the Peugeot 208 was sold 516 times. The Model 3, also from Tesla, was the third best-selling EV in Denmark in March with 443 sales.

The Model Y’s performance in March made it the best-selling vehicle in a single month in Denmark ever, eclipsing that of the Ford Kuga in July 2020, which accumulated 1,688 sales.

DENMARK EV SALES – MARCH 2023 (VIA BILSTATISTIK.DK)

  1. Tesla Model Y – 3,203
  2. Peugeot 208 – 516
  3. Tesla Model 3 – 443
  4. Ford Kuga – 436
  5. Volvo XC40 – 35

The performance capped off a dominant Q1 in the country for Tesla, as it sold 5,225 units in Denmark overall through the three-month span. This was enough for it to take over European names like Volkswagen, Peugeot, and other high-production companies like Toyota.

Tesla has performed well in Denmark for quite a few years, and in 2020, it held one-third of the total electric vehicle market as Volkswagen and Hyundai looked on.

The country has high hopes for electric vehicles as well, as the Danish Climate Act and Climate Action Plan have lofty targets to meet a 70 percent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030, hoping to be carbon neutral in 2050. Electric vehicles are a big part of that goal and can contribute to fewer emissions and cleaner air.

Tesla has expanded its presence in Denmark over the last few years and has expanded its Supercharger network in the country as well. Currently, there are fourteen active Superchargers in Denmark, and many of them serve non-Tesla EVs.

However, the Tesla Supercharger map shows that an expansion is well underway, as the automaker has plans to nearly double the Supercharger network in Denmark by adding thirteen new locations across the country by the end of this year.

The Model Y’s dominating performance in the market captured 49 percent of Danish EV sales in March.
