Tesla China picks up the pace with 13k+ new insurance registrations in March’s 1st week

Tesla China saw approximately 13,266 insurance registrations for its vehicles between February 27 to March 5, 2023. In the previous week, Tesla China saw 10,705 vehicle registrations.

As per industry watchers in China, insurance registrations for the Tesla Model Y reached 10,157 during the week ending March 5. This represented a 27.83% increase from the previous week. It also marks the first time this year that Model Y registrations topped 10,000.

Tesla Model 3 insurance registrations reached 3,345 units in the week ending March 5, as per a CNEV Post report. This number represents a 12.69% drop from the previous week’s results. It should be noted, however, that the Model 3 line has been shut down during the last days of February to make way for updates to the all-electric sedan’s production line.

While Tesla China does not report its weekly sales in the domestic market, insurance registrations of the company’s vehicles provide a pretty good idea of how the electric vehicle maker’s offerings are performing in the local market. With this in mind, Tesla China’s 13,266 insurance registrations for the week ending March 5 are impressive.

Tesla China has shown fair results this year so far. In January, data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) revealed that Tesla China sold 66,051 Gigafactory Shanghai-made vehicles over the month. This was despite the Chinese New Year break, which started on January 22, 2023.

Tesla’s numbers for February were not bad either. Despite the short month and the Model 3 line being shut down for upgrades, the CPCA still noted that Tesla China saw wholesale sales of 74,402 vehicles in February. Industry watchers also estimate that from January to February, Tesla China had sold 140,453 Giga Shanghai-made vehicles.
