Tesla Model X with FSD beta navigates to service center with no interventions

The concept of electric cars driving themselves to their respective service appointments which very well be the standard when Tesla meets its autonomy goals and rolls out the full-featured version of its Full Self-Driving system. The latest version of Tesla’s FSD Beta is not yet fully autonomous, but the system has recently accomplished such a feat when a Model X drove itself from the home of its owner to a service center with zero-intervention.

John, a Tesla Model X owner and the founder of the Tesla Owners of Silicon Valley group, posted the trip, which was shared on YouTube. His model X, which was running FSD beta 8.1 (2020.48.35.1), had a service appointment, according to the electric vehicle advocate. This offered a chance to see how a drive from a suburban area to the Tesla service center could be managed by the new version of the FSD beta.

FSD beta 8.1 was able to manage the entire trip without any human intervention, as could be seen in the trip’s video. Certainly, traffic was light on a large number of the roads on which the FSD beta navigated, but the feat was still remarkable. If anything, it provided a glimpse of how Tesla owners could simply drive their vehicles to their respective service appointments on their own in the future. The Tesla ownership experience would be made much more convenient by such a notion.

Tesla’s FSD beta has gone through several iterations since it was released to its first batch of users in late October last year. The advanced driver-assist system has steadily gotten better since then, with recent versions behaving more like a careful human driver. This was exhibited in a drive through San Francisco’s streets when the FSD beta had to deal with several skateboarders who decided to counterflow while the system had the right of way.

The safety of the FSD Beta was something Elon Musk emphasized during his conversation with Sandy Munro, an automotive teardown expert. Musk noted that Tesla aims to make Teslas so far that they would not crash even under extremely challenging circumstances.
