The Tesla Model Y is a well-rounded, impressive vehicle. Its balance of efficiency and cost makes it the best EV in its class. Motortrend compared Model Y to other cars in the same class and is convinced of this.
The 2020 Tesla Model Y Dual Motor Long Range was used for the test. The experiments took place in a fully instrumented vehicle at California Speedway.
The Model Y Dual Motor Long Range reached 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. This is only a tenth slower than the Jaguar I-Pace and a full second faster than the Audi e-Tron, both of which are considerably more expensive. At 114.8 mph, marginally ahead of the Jaguar and well-clear of the Audi, the all-electric, sophisticated beast crossed the quarter-mile in just 12.4 seconds.
Model Y provides excellent handling with low center of gravity given by the underfloor batteries. On the test, the car was equipped with mildly sporty Continental ProContact RX all-season tires on its 19-inch wheels. Model Y still pulled a significant 0.86 average lateral g on the skidpad and placed a 25.2-second lap of Figure Eight at 0.75 average lateral g. A comparison of the data shows that in this test, Model Y about equalized the Jaguar and was far ahead of the Audi.
In the braking category, it was the same story. It took 118 feet for the Model Y to stop at 60 mph, which is pretty solid only a few feet behind the Jaguar, which stopped at 112 feet. Audi was slightly behind — or ahead, depending on how you look at it — requiring 128 feet.
It is worth noting that the version of Model Y tested is the current base model, which is focused on optimizing efficiency. Not surprisingly, Model Y Performance would show significantly enhanced performance for all these categories, especially in handling and braking.
As compared to everything else in the electric luxury SUV market, the Long Range is a steal at $49,990. That price point can not be touched by Jaguar, Audi, and Mercedes.
