Elon Musk drops Plaid Tesla Model S teaser ahead of Battery Day

Tesla’s highly anticipated Battery Day is still a few weeks away, but CEO Elon Musk appears to have begun sharing mysterious teasers about some of the technologies that will be unveiled at the event. Based on a recent Twitter post, Tesla’s Plaid Model S, and maybe even the Plaid Model X, may be unveiled at Battery Day.

Ever the internet’s resident meme lord, Elon Musk recently posted a photo of Herbert Ruggles Tarlek, Jr., a character on Cincinnati’s television situation comedy WKRP, which ran from 1978 to 1982. The character was known for his colorful plaid suits, typically dominated by provocative colors and patterns. Musk’s tweet noted: “One day soon, I will wear this outfit.”

Musk’s statement was simple, though references to plaid patterns were promptly connected by the Tesla community to the upcoming company’s Plaid Model S and X and Battery Day, scheduled for September 22. Although the CEO’s Herb Tarlek picture may be a clear act of jest, it should be remembered that Musk is known for dropping enigmatic clues about the future products of Tesla.

Musk posted something similar back in 2014 when he noted that it was “about time to unveil the D,” referring to the Model S P85D, Tesla’s first vehicle with two electric motors in lineup. Musk’s references to a “D” then incited a large number of memes and lighthearted posts from the Tesla community, taking into account the letter’s connotations on the internet. Musk has also started posting about lemurs on Twitter in the days leading up to the Mid-Range Model 3 update.

Tesla’s Plaid Model S and Model X models are set to be launched as the latest top-tier versions of the company’s sedan and SUV flagships. Announced last year, Musk noted that there will be three electric motors on the Plaid Model S, identical to the next-generation Roadster, and that the car will have seven seats. Most notably, as with the Model 3, the Plaid Model S will also be track-capable, possibly due to new battery and powertrain tech.

Last year, prototypes of the Plaid Model S were spotted on the Nurburgring, and the two test units ended up smashing the unofficial record set by a prototype of the Porsche Taycan Turbo, a car bred to be on the track. Information about the Plaid Model S remain undisclosed so far, though speculations point to a possible refreshment of the interior and exterior in the near future.
