According to a new product information sheet posted by a potential customer, Tesla is releasing the specifications for its new Powerwall+ energy storage device.
Tesla’s Powerwall energy storage system is what the company uses for its solar customers. The Powerwall saves money by storing surplus energy captured by solar panels or from the grid and reserving it for power outages, overnight hours, or peak rate periods. Tesla first launched the Powerwall in 2015, and its Powerwall 2 sibling was announced in October 2016. Tesla is currently reworking the Powerwall, according to CEO Elon Musk, who outlined the enhancements the company expects to make to the energy storage system in the coming months.
On April 21st, Musk announced that Tesla’s residential energy products will be sold as a package and will only operate with one another. This ensures that Tesla Powerwalls will not work with solar panels from other manufacturers. Moreover, Musk said during the Q1 2021 Earnings Call that Tesla would not sell any of its Solar products without a Powerwall. Musk said that the rationale was to make installation easier, which he stated would be reduced “dramatically.”
Tesla is giving potential customers the requirements for the new Powerwall now that it has been published. The latest Powerwall specs, first posted by r/tangarg, show more power, raising the maximum output to 9.6kW from the previous continuous 5kW and 7kW peak outputs. The following is the spec sheet (via Electrek):
Tesla writes about the new Powerwall+:
“Powerwall+ is an integrated solar battery system to store energy from solar production. Its integrated design and streamlined installation allow for a simple connection to any home, and improved surge power capability brings whole home backup in a smaller package. System smart controls enable owners to customize system behavior to suit their renewable energy needs.”
Tesla has worked hard to improve the Powerwall’s and home energy system’s capabilities in general. Previous Powerwall installations only included the Powerwall, but Tesla is now displaying the unit alongside the newly launched Tesla Inverter.
Tesla Powerwalls and Solar will effectively act “as a giant distributed utility,” Musk said during the Q1 2021 Earnings Call. Not only does this simplify the implementation process, but the new framework and design also allows the grid to be more stable overall.
