It appears that the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are poised to receive a price increase in China later this week.
Discussions about a potential price increase to the Giga Shanghai-made Model Y have been abounding as of late, especially as several Tesla salespeople referenced a price hike for the all-electric crossover in their social media accounts. Local media outlet Jiemian, citing an alleged response from Tesla, reported that a price hike is indeed coming for the all-electric crossover.
A more recent report from local automotive news outlet Auto Home provided more details about Tesla’s expected price hike. As claimed by the publication, it is not just the Model Y crossover that would be receiving a price adjustment. The Model 3 sedan would reportedly be seeing a price increase as well. What’s more, the price adjustments will reportedly be implemented on November 9, Thursday.
The publication hinted that the Long Range Dual Motor All Wheel Drive versions of the Model 3 and Model Y will be affected by the upcoming price increase. Price adjustments for the vehicles’ Rear Wheel Drive versions may also be rolled out at a later time, Auto Home claimed, citing a source familiar with the matter.
The updates from Tesla China’s price increase for the Model 3 and Model Y are quite interesting since they do not follow the electric vehicle maker’s typical price hike strategy. Normally, Tesla would implement a price adjustment and simply announce it on its social media handles. Yet this time around, the electric vehicle maker seemed to be informing consumers about a price hike before the adjustment was implemented.
Gigafactory Shanghai currently produces only two types of vehicles: the Model 3 sedan and the Model Y crossover. The flagship Model S and Model X are still imported from the United States. So far, Tesla China offers two variants of the Model 3 to consumers: an RWD version and an AWD variant, which have a starting price of RMB 259,900 ($35,680) and RMB 295,900 ($40,630), respectively.
The Model Y is offered with three variants: a base RWD version, a mid-tier Long Range Dual Motor AWD variant, and a top-tier Performance trim. The Model Y trims currently start at RMB 263,900 ($36,200), RMB 299,900 ($41,180), and RMB 363,900 ($49,980), respectively.
