Elon Musk shortlisted as TIME’s 2022 Person of the Year after winning the award last year

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been shortlisted in TIME Magazine’s 2022 Person of the Year awards. With his nomination this year, Musk now has the chance to secure the coveted award two years in a row.

Apart from Musk, other contenders for TIME’s 2022 Person of the Year award include Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, noted philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, the US Supreme Court, Iran’s Protesters, China President Xi Jinping, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, and outgoing US Representative Liz Cheney, among others.

TIME received a lot of flak when it named Musk its Person of the Year last year, particularly among progressive advocates in the United States. Critics included Democratic adviser Kurt Bardella, who dubbed the award “an absolute disgrace,” and former California congresswoman Katie Hill, who posted, “Oh for f*cks sake,” as a response to Musk’s award on Twitter.

Nevertheless, TIME noted last year that Musk’s achievements through his companies are notable. “Musk is easily cast as a hubristic supervillain, lumped in with the tech bros and space playboys, for whom money is scorekeeping and rockets are the ultimate toy. But he’s different: he’s a manufacturing magnate—moving metal, not bytes. His rockets, built from scratch on an autodidact’s mold-breaking vision, have saved taxpayers billions, reinvigorated America’s space dreams, and are launching satellites to expand Internet access across the globe.”

“If Tesla delivers on its pledges, it has the potential to strike a major blow against global warming. The man from the future where technology makes all things possible is a throwback to our glorious industrial past, before America stagnated and stopped producing anything but rules, restrictions, limits, obstacles, and Facebook,” TIME wrote then.

Musk has only become more newsworthy this 2022. Amidst his acquisition of social media platform Twitter in a $44 billion deal, Musk caught headlines across the globe as he made aggressive changes to the platform. Since taking ownership of Twitter, Musk has also followed through on his crusade to promote free speech, resulting in the CEO becoming even more of a polarizing figure than before.

If Musk does secure TIME Magazine’s 2022 Person of the Year award, he will become one of the few individuals who were able to secure the coveted award several times. Franklin D. Roosevelt, for example, was able to become TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year three times.

TIME is expected to release the winner of its 2022 Person of the Year award this Wednesday.
