Report: Elon Musk proposes to buy Twitter for original offer price

According to Bloomberg, Elon Musk proposed going through with the original deal to buy Twitter for $44 billion, citing people familiar with the matter. According to those sources, Elon Musk made the proposal in a letter to Twitter, proposing to buy Twitter for the original offer of $54.20 a share.

At the time of this writing, there is no filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission showing that Elon Musk has made this proposal. We’ll update when or if that filing happens or Elon Musk or Twitter deny the reports.

This news follows earlier reports of another Twitter whistleblower who might give testimony in the trial scheduled for later this month. The new whistleblower would focus on an alleged internal Twitter study that found that Twitter’s bot problem is much more significant than acknowledged.

The New York Post noted that the second whistleblower is a former Twitter employee who said that Twitter executives laughed when they found out about the report. The whistleblower said, “Twitter execs laughed when they were told about the report and said, ‘We have always had a bot problem.”

Elon Musk initially wanted to buy Twitter because he felt as if he could turn it into a platform that embraces free speech. During an interview with Chris Anderson in April, Elon Musk said, “I think it’s very important for there to be an inclusive arena for free speech.”
