Tesla “MCU3” leak indicates AMD Ryzen SoC for overkill infotainment performance

Tesla seems to be putting a lot of effort into ensuring that its next-generation flagship vehicles, the Model S and Model X update, have plenty of processing power. New photos from the electric vehicle community indicate that the new Model S and Model X’s infotainment systems will be fitted with an equally impressive AMD Ryzen System-on-Chip (SoC), following leaks about the vehicles’ impressive AMD Navi 23 GPU from noted tech leaker Patrick Schur.

The Ryzen SoC, when combined with the AMD Navi 23 GPU, will effectively transform the flagship vehicles’ onboard computer into a beast, making it one of the fastest infotainment systems on the market. GM, on the other hand, has emphasized the use of Unreal Engine to seamlessly render the graphics on the Hummer EV’s displays, but has given little information about the hardware specifications of the hulking all-electric SUV.

The latest Model S and Model X will most likely be capable of running demanding applications such as games, thanks to an AMD Ryzen SoC and a Navi 23 GPU. Elon Musk and Tesla have hinted at a number of exciting games coming to Tesla’s in-car gaming system, including The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. According to Tesla’s official pages for the Model S and Model X, the vehicles’ computers have a processing capacity of 10 teraflops, which is equivalent to the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

Surprisingly, the chip industry is currently facing a shortage as a result of the pandemic, as people were stocking up on computers and electronics. Because of the shortage, automakers such as Ford, GM, and Fiat Chrysler have stated that vehicle production this year could be slowed due to chip issues. Companies like Sony have blamed the shortage as a major reason why consoles like the PlayStation 5 have been difficult to obtain.

Tesla may be able to obtain the requisite AMD Ryzen and Navi 23 GPU chips for its flagships without too many issues, given that the latest Model S and Model X are luxury vehicles. If the recent leaks are right, and Tesla is able to secure a consistent supply of AMD chips for the Model S and Model X refresh, the upcoming vehicles will be true computers on wheels in every sense of the word.
