Tesla Gigafactory Berlin may have caught a lot of headlines this year due to the controversy surrounding the facility and its local opponents, but the Germany-based Model Y plant is expanding its capabilities at a steady rate. And if recent reports are any indication, it would appear that Giga Berlin is about to raise its vehicle production further.
In early October, Tesla announced that Giga Berlin has been able to produce 2,000 Model Y crossovers in one week. This translates to a run rate of over 100,000 units per year. Such numbers are impressive for the young facility, but it is also notably lower than the output of Tesla’s other facilities, such as Gigafactory Shanghai in China and the Fremont Factory in California.
As per a report from Märkische Oderzeitung (MOZ), Tesla’s Germany-based factory is currently preparing to adopt a three-shift operation. The new system is reportedly going to start on December 16. The first shift will reportedly start at 6 a.m., the next at 2 p.m., and the third shift at 10 p.m. With such a system in place, Model Y production could continue around the clock in Giga Berlin.
With its third shift of workers, Giga Berlin is expected to produce substantially more Model Y units than the 2,000 per week reported by the company in October. Insiders have estimated that Giga Berlin is likely at about 3,000 vehicles per week for now. Industry publication TeslaMag.de estimates that the facility could reach an output of about 4,500 vehicles per week with a three-shift system, assuming that the factory only produces cars on weekdays.
While the idea of Giga Berlin reaching 5,000 cars per week before the end of 2022 sounds a bit ambitious at this stage, the electric vehicle maker could simply push the facility in the closing days of the month to hit its self-imposed target. Tesla had adopted similar strategies in the past, particularly when the company was pushing towards its target of 5,000 Model 3 per week at the Fremont Factory back in Q2 2018.
Estimates currently suggest that Giga Berlin employs over 7,500 people for now, though the company is still looking to increase its headcount. For its current stage, Giga Berlin is reportedly looking to employ up to 12,000 people.
