Tesla is holding an open-door event for residents of Grünheide, the municipality where its Gigafactory Berlin plant is located, on Sunday, September 11.
Tesla is inviting local citizens to the event to talk with local employees “on the topics of water use and environmental and water protection at Tesla, road and rail infrastructure & traffic, forest conversion, battery cell production, works council or training and studies at Tesla,” an announcement on Grünheide’s municipality website states.
There will also be test drives, food trucks, and activities for children, according to the Grünheide website.
The event is not being held at the Gigafactory Berlin facility but instead at the Müggelspreehalle near Bahnhofstrasse 4. Tesla will host local residents and visitors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time. Reuters first found the event.
Gigafactory Berlin officially kicked off production earlier this year after several years of construction, land development, and local objections against the project. Tesla fended off several complaints from local environmental groups and citizens, who were concerned about the company’s automotive production and how it could affect groundwater quality, amongst other things.
Eventually, Tesla was granted an environmental license from the State of Brandenburg in March. Production and deliveries began in April. The State required Tesla to hold various environmental requirements at the site, including 96 different requirements to protect local drinking water.
Although some groups have continued to push against the Tesla Gigafactory Berlin plant, the automaker has continued to produce vehicles at the factory as its approval has never been threatened by another complaint.
