Elon Musk had a crazy life, but he wasn’t the only one of his family to start companies, make millions, or gain fame.
From his filmmaker sister Tosca to his actress ex-wife Talulah Riley, Musk’s family is chock-full of entrepreneurs and revolutionaries. Today, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX has a new family member: a baby boy born in May with his girlfriend, Grimes, a musician.
But Musk, who was born in Pretoria, South Africa, before emigrating to Canada, and ultimately California, had a large immediate family that included two ex-wives, a set of twins, and a set of triplets even before his new infant.
Here is a closer look at the family tree of the Musk family.
Errol Musk, Elon Musk’s father, is an engineer from South Africa.
According to Elon, Errol Musk has a genius-level IQ and was officially the youngest person, according to a 2017 Rolling Stone profile, to receive a professional engineer’s qualification in South Africa.
When Elon was a child, after divorcing his parents, he moved in with his dad. At the time, according to Rolling Stone, Errol Musk was working in construction and emerald mining.
In 2018, Errol Musk made headlines when it was reported that he had a child with Jana Bezuidenhout, his then-30-year-old former stepdaughter, whom he has known since she was 4 years old.
Today, Musk and Errol are estranged. The Tesla CEO told Rolling Stone that his father is “a terrible human being.” “You have no idea about how bad,” Musk said. “Almost every crime you can possibly think of, he has done.”
Maye Musk, Elon Musk’s mother, is a dietitian and model.
For over five decades, since the age of 15, Maye Musk has been modeling. According to The New York Times, she appeared on boxes of Special K cereal and the cover of Time magazine, and walked at shows at New York Fashion Week.
In 2017, at age 69, Musk became a spokeswoman for CoverGirl.
Up until 1979, Maye Musk was married to Errol Musk, and she characterized the relationship as abusive. Maye Musk and her three children moved to Canada after they divorced, where she developed a business as a dietitian.
Kimbal Musk is Elon Musk’s younger brother. He’s a restaurateur and philanthropist.
Kimbal Musk is currently the founder of three food companies: Big Green, a charity called Kitchen Restaurant Group, and Square Roots, an urban farming company.
When he was a teenager, Musk moved from South Africa to Canada along with Elon Musk, eventually forming Zip2 with Elon and selling it in 1999 for $307 million. He was a PayPal investor and is currently a member of the board of Tesla and SpaceX.
Kimbal Musk went on to enroll at the French Culinary Institute in New York, and, according to The New York Times, he decided to devote his career to food after breaking his neck in a tubing accident in 2010.
Kimbal was married twice: first to Jen Lewin, with whom he and Big Green founded The Kitchen Restaurant Party. Together, they have three children, two sons named Luca and August, and a third child with an unknown name.
In 2018, at an intimate wedding in Dallas, he married Christiana Wyly, the daughter of ex-billionaire Sam Wyly.
Tosca Musk, Elon Musk’s younger sister, runs a streaming service called Passionflix.
According to her IMDb profile, Tosca Musk has been making movies since 2001, and has made more than 30 to date.
Currently, she is the cofounder and CEO of Passionflix, a movie streaming service adapted from romance novels. In 2016, Musk formed the company and raised over $4 million from investors, including Kimbal Musk.
Musk has two children, twins named Isabeau and Grayson, and is unmarried.
Lyndon Rive is the cofounder of SolarCity and Elon Musk’s cousin.
In 2006, Lyndon Rive, along with his brother Peter, cofounded SolarCity. He served as the CEO of the company until after Tesla acquired the company for $2.6 billion in 2016. Until 2017, Rive remained on as head of sales for Tesla’s Energy Division.
Rive formed a software company called Everdream with his brothers, Russ and Peter, in 1999, prior to launching SolarCity. Eight years later, they sold it to Dell for $120 million.
Peter Rive is also a SolarCity cofounder and a cousin of Musk’s.
Eight months after it acquired SolarCity, Peter Rive, SolarCity’s cofounder and CTO, left Tesla.
In February 2019, Zola Electric, a startup focused on bringing clean, affordable energy to Africa, joined both Lyndon and Peter Rive.
Russ Rive is the founder of an art and technical production company called SuperUber. He’s also a cousin of Musk’s.
With his brothers, Lyndon and Peter, Russ Rive co-founded a tech company called Everdream. Since then, he has co-founded the production company SuperUber, which has Tesla and SpaceX among its clients.
Almeda Rive is Russ, Peter, and Lyndon’s sister.

Almeda Rive is a competitive dirt-bike rider, according to Vanity Fair, and also worked in sales at SolarCity, according to LinkedIn.
Justine Musk is an author and Elon Musk’s first wife.
While they were attending Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Justine Wilson met Elon Musk. While Musk eventually relocated to the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, they reconnected as Musk began working on his first start-up and after graduation, Justine began working on her first book.
They got married in 2000, according to an essay in Marie Claire by Justine Musk.
The couple eventually moved to Los Angeles and had a son named Nevada, who, when he was 10 weeks old, they lost to SIDS. They eventually had twins and triplets named Griffin, Xavier, Damian, Saxon, and Kai, five sons in total.
In Marie Claire, Justine Musk wrote that she was a ‘stater wife,’ and characterized the relationship between her and Musk as unhealthy. In 2008, the couple divorced.
Talulah Riley is a British actress. She and Musk have been married twice.
The tech mogul started dating the actress Talulah Riley after Musk’s divorce from Justine. Six weeks later, they got engaged.
In 2010, Riley and Musk got married. Two years later, when Musk tweeted, news of their divorce became public: “It was an amazing four years. I will love you forever. You will make someone very happy one day” at Riley on Twitter.
In 2013, the couple remarried. The next year, Musk filed for, but rejected, a second divorce. Riley filed for divorce from Musk in 2016, which was finalized later in that year.
However, the two stayed on good terms. “We still see each other all the time and take care of each other,” she told People.
Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher, started dating Elon Musk in 2018.
In May 2018, alongside Grimes, the Canadian singer and producer, Musk arrived at the annual Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Page Six reported at the time that the pair had been ‘quietly dating’ for a couple of weeks.
The couple met over Twitter when Musk was trying to make a joke about artificial intelligence and learned Grimes had beaten him to the punch.
In January 2020, Grimes posted to her Instagram and Twitter accounts a partially nude photo that showed her pregnant with a Photoshopped fetus on her abdomen. She later confirmed that she had a baby with Musk, who was born on May 4th. The couple named their son X A-Xii, which is partly a reference to a “Archangel.” CIA aircraft.
