The short version

Most owners charge with a 240V outlet or a wall connector. A standard 120V outlet adds about 3 miles of range per hour — enough for light driving, not much else. Use the mobile connector with the right adapter, or install a dedicated circuit.

Options that work

  • Wall Connector (best): 48A on a 60A circuit, roughly 30-44 miles of range per hour depending on the Model Y config.
  • NEMA 14-50 outlet: 32A with the mobile connector, roughly 20-30 miles/hour. Fine for most daily driving.
  • Standard 120V outlet: ~3 miles/hour. Usable only for plug-in hybrids or very low daily mileage.

Settings

  • Set your daily charge limit (80% is a common daily default for Long Range).
  • Use scheduled charging to charge during off-peak rates if your utility has time-of-use pricing.
  • Preconditioning while plugged in warms the cabin and battery from grid power, not the battery — useful in winter.

Cost math

Use the charging calculator with your local rate. A typical North America home rate of $0.14/kWh costs roughly $35-55/month for 1,000 miles of Model Y driving, depending on efficiency and charging losses.
